Happy Feet

Recently efforts to be more “green” or eco friendly have become popular. Companies are adopting eco friendly business models – their caring user groups pay more for a product because it is recyclable or biodegradable. However, many people still do wasteful activities without any major consequences. “Happy Feet” attempts to make palpable the effects of energy usage on the planet through the use of changing ground surfaces. The floor acts as a feedback mechanism for home energy usage. The carpet may transform from a lush grassy texture to one of hardened dry soil in response to the amount of electricity consumption. “Happy Feet” brings attention to effects of increased carbon, global warming and how the microcosm of the home is part of the larger ecology. In the past the notion “the health of the land is the health of the people” was especially important for farmers. “Happy Feet” follows along the same idea, applying it to the modern home.
