A common approach in learning is using an analogy or metaphor to compare something relatively complex and unknown with a model of something familiar. For example a typical analogy used to describe the way a drug bonds to a receptor site is how a key is inserted into a lock. However, chemical bonds do not function in the same way as the mechanics of a key and lock. Visualization can sometimes be misleading. In learning about wine, there is a depth of information and many subtleties to experience. The path to becoming a certified sommelier is time consuming and relatively expensive. “A Symphony of Taste” suggests the use of audition (instead of visualization) as a learning tool for taste discrimination. Aspects of music (tempo, pitch, genre, instruments used, etc) become a sort of parallel for different qualities of wine (sweetness, aftertaste, alcohol content etc).
