Virtual Traffic

On the spectrum of communication, person to person (face to face) contact seems to be rich with meaningful interaction. In contrast online communication through instant messengers or email transmits much less sensory information and expression. Online it can be difficult finding a sense of community – one must constantly interpret numbers of some form (website hits, the date of a post or the number of replies in a thread etc). The anonymity and distortion of identity in the virtual world is unavoidable, while physical public spaces act in a similar manner they do so without limiting the feeling of presence. “Virtual Traffic” allows one to experience a virtual sense of foot traffic via ambient sound. For instance, an online forum has several open threads, when accessing a particular topic the user can listen to the amount of conversational white noise as a measure of several aspects such as popularity, depth of replies, and how many people are actively responding. When a visitor enters the forum, one can hear the sound of a footstep, as more people come to the website one hears the sound high heels and shuffling feet, the presence of a crowd.
