Touch

Touch is so fundamental to our experiences that it sometimes seems invisible. Proprioception is how we feel embodied, and that we can feel our limbs and extremities. The skin is one of the largest organs and has a multitude of touch receptors. Our hands are some of the most dexterous in comparison to many animals and enable countless activities. The touch screen interface has been developed for hands. Touch like audition and visual perception has a capacity for spatial resolution, as well as temperature, pain, and vibration/pressure. American society has set certain rules of courtesy and expected norms in regard to touching one another. The “5ense5” project investigates how we might use touch interact with our environment rather than other people.
