Audition often is ranked right after sight due to its numerous affordances. Large parts of the brain are also dedicated to auditory stimuli processing. Air is the medium of sound and thus stimuli are often heard by multiple persons. However more and more so, auditory space is being privatized. Some advantages of sound/audition include: being able to travel through barriers which would block vision, ability to aurally localize, relatively wide range of tones (including imaginary tones), temporal accuracy etc.
